MRI MACHINE PHILIPS MR5300 HANDED OVER TO SIBU HOSPITAL

Sarawak Heart Foundation Deputy Chairman Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian officiated at the handing over of Philips MR5300 to Sibu Hospital on 10 April 2026.

The machine is a collaboration between the Foundation, the Ministry of Health, 20 donors and Philips Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

The Foundation raised RM2.02 million for the purchase of a Philips Diamond Select 1.5T Achieva dStream which was replaced, through an exchange arrangement with Philips Malaysia, by the latest and most advanced MRI unit, the Philips MR5300. The Ministry of Health allocated RM3.2 million to cover necessary site works and MRI accessories.

The Philips MR5300 project significantly boosts healthcare capacity in the Central Zone of Sarawak, providing faster, more accessible care and improving overall health outcomes for the region.

Cardiac MRI is a vital diagnostic tool for assessing heart muscle health. This diagnostic imaging helps doctors assess whether the heart muscle is still functioning and determine whether procedures such as bypass surgery and angioplasty are appropriate for the patient. Doctors can then make better clinical decisions.

With this advanced technology, patients from across the region will no longer need to travel to Kuching for the service, making Sibu Hospital the second hospital in Sarawak with such a facility.

Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim also presented tokens of appreciation to the donors of the machine.

Deputy Health Minister Dato Hajjah Hanifah Hajar Taib witnessed the ceremony together with Foundation Board Trustees Datin Patinggi Datuk Amar Hajah Jamilah Binti Haji Anu, Dato Anne Teng, Mr Pauline Kon Suk Khim, Mr Eric Lim Swee Khoon, Director State Health Department Sarawak Dr Veronica Lugah, and hospital staff.
